Mercury Welding Supplies were proud sponsors of SkillWELD 2010 Southern Division held at Crawley College on 23rd & 24th February. The competition offered the opportunity for trainee welders to compete against the best in the sector. Entrants had to weld components, structures, plates, pipes and tanks using a variety of welding processes.

Congratulations to Jake Rambaldini of Doosan Babcock the winner of the Southern Division (pictured above being presented with his prize by Mike Butler MD of Mercury Welding Supplies).

Welding Helmets

Welding helmets are used when welding to protect the eyes, face and neck from flash burn, ultraviolet light, sparks and heat. Most commonly used with Arc Welding, Mig Welding and Tig Welding processes, welding helmets are necessary to prevent arc eye, a painful condition where the cornea is inflamed.

Now the most commonly used Welding process. Mig Welding is used in all areas of fabrication & repair due to ites speed and the simplicity of "setting up". Widely used in car body repairs from the DIY user to the professional bodyshop.

Tig Welding

TIG Welding produces a very high quality weld in most materials i.e. aluminium, stainless steel, mild steel, copper etc. With new electronic advances the AC wave form can be altered to suit a particular application. A high percentage of units are now inverter based and can be used on 230v(domestic) power.

Arc Welding

Arc Welding is a versatile process especially when welding exotic materials. The first Arc welding method to be invented and still commonly used today. Other names for this type of welding are "Stick welding, MMA welding, Electrode welding and is undertaken using AC transformers, DC rectifiers or laterly Inverters.

Gas Welding and Cutting

The most common ghases used for welding and cutting are oxygen and acetylene, propane can also be used to cut and heat. There are various combinations of torches from a dedicated cutting torch, to a torch just used for welding or brazing. A model 'O' torch can produce a very small flame which is ideal for lead burning.

Plasma Cutting

Most plasma cutters work on a transferred arc & compressed air. Plasma cutters will cut most electrically conductive materials and in many cases has replaced oxy-acetylene cutting.
